Retro Insider - "OC Supertones"
So, let's talk about a band that might need an introduction, as they have been out of the Christian music scene for a while now.
Do you remember ska? It was a music style that combined a hard rock sound with a bit of rap, punk, and a horn section. In the mid-nineties no one did it better than the Orange County Supertones.
The OC Supertones began as a junior high school band called Saved in 1995. The three original members were Matt Morginsky, Jason Carson, and Tony Terusa. They took on a ska sound when the music became popular. In 1996 they released their first album, The Adventures of the O.C. Supertones. This album is their most raw and it's one of their most celebrated, which contains "Who Can be Against Me" and "Adonai".
1997 saw the release of the record that put them into Christian music stardom. Supertones Strike Back, along with the previous album they sold 250,000 copies. Songs included the title track "Resolution", "Louder than the Mob", and "Perseverence of the Saints".
1999 saw the end of the ska era as being hip. OC recognized this and created Chase the Sun. The album was musical experimentation with a life of Christ theme throughout. The band even admitted they were no longer a ska band. Then in the new millennium there was the release of 2000’s Loud and Clear. They attempted a live-in-studio effect with the sound. The band lyrically were deep and theological, although not entirely accurate. Songs included "Wilderness" and "Jury Duty".
2002 saw the release of Hi-Fi Revival. This was a batch of many songs recorded in sessions at Dark Horse Studios in Tennessee. Some others went on a side project. In the same year, they released their first live album, called Live Vol 1, which was a collection of hits and praise songs. We are still waiting for Vol 2.
2004 would see the release of their last studio record, although the public would not know this until the next year. Revenge of the OC Supertones had the songs "Transmission" and "We Shall Overcome".
In 2005, the band released a greatest hits package called Unite and announced to the world that it would cease as a band. They played their final show October 7, 2005 at Biola University in La Mirada California. The show lasted for three hours with former members joining the band on stage. Some of the highlights of their existence involved having their video played on MTV, and had the honour of playing for Pope John Paul II in St. Louis in 1999.
