It May Affect You

I have no idea if the topic of mental illness is anywhere on your radar.  It certainly wasn't until I married into a family with such history.  It's certainly something to discuss, and that goes for those who are diagnosed with mental illness themselves.

On May 4 at 7:30 pm, Join Parker and in-studio guest Mark Alward on RetroSwitch Live as we disuss the effects of mental illness, how you can be a support to those who suffer from it, and if you are diagnosed with it, how you can help reduce the shame or stigma surrounding mental illness.  We'll also discuss how the church can deal with this issue.  Mark is an author and also the founder of http://www.itsmyturnmovent.org/, an online forum for those dealing with mental illness who can share their stories via video messaging.

Of course, we'll still be playing your favourite retro hits and play some of Mark's favourites.  You can even request ahead of time right on this blog, or the social networks below.

Today Make It Count

Don't you love it when after you listen to a song about five times, you suddenly get illuminated with the thought, Hey, I really love this song!  Turns out, frontman Jon Foreman and company of alternative rock band Switchfoot captivated me with that thought.  Switchfoot has been around since the 90's and there is no sign of them slowing down.  In 2011, Switchfoot released an album called Vice Versus, and the first track is called "Afterlife."
'Cause everyday the world is made
A chance to change but I feel the same
And I wonder why I would wait til I die to come alive
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife

                                                   -from "Afterlife," Switchfoot, 2011

I was driving in my car the other morning blasting this song and reflecting.  (Yes, driving, blasting and reflecting is possible to do together!)  No matter what circumstance life throws at me, striving toward effectively handling the situation is crucial.  I can't stand allowing conflict to stand in the way of making the most of every opportunity.  Why wait?  And why would I allow myself to stand still, even though sometimes I don't want to change my attitude?  I read a verse recently God is the focalpoint in all things.  He is the master of every decision, the designer of all art, and the conscience of all things good.

God is not the author of confusion but of peace.
